LWIR uses thermal energy to create an image so it can turn night into day on even the darkest nights. This can be very useful for night time search and rescue missions. Presently Squadron 131 is experimenting with 3 different cameras as shown below. On the left is a camera made by Seek Thermal (Thermal.com) that plugs into your Apple or Android smart phone. Details of the camera can be obtained by visiting web site thermal.com. In the center is a LWIR monocular built by Raytheon. The monocular is better suited for search and rescue as it can see out to several thousand meters and has zoom, contrast and brightness controls. The third camera soon to be on the right is a wing strut mount unit with WiFi that is soon to be undergoing flight test.
